Multisensory contributions to affective touch

چکیده
Just as for any other sensory system, researchers have long wanted to discriminate between the discriminative and hedonic aspects of tactile perception. Supporting such a distinction, have, in recent decades, uncovered existence dedicated system receptors hairy skin (C-Tactile, CT, afferents) that appear be preferentially tuned pleasant stroking (i.e. caressing) touch. No matter what kind touch one is talking about, though, it important recognize human perception fundamentally multisensory, meaning we feel, not mention think about experience, modulated by inputs are available senses. This review summarizes latest evidence concerning these multisensory contributions focusing, particular, on case affective Given CT afferents far more common (as compared glabrous) skin, question further raised whether relative contribution various senses may differ function site stimulated glabrous versus skin) or judgment (sensory-discriminative hedonic) being made.

Auditory and Visual Contributions to Multisensory Integration
Multisensory integration, or the merging of information from multiple sensory modalities, is important for many everyday tasks. One methodology used for examining this process is the Sound Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI), which presents participants with a number of flashes and either the same number of beeps (congruent) or a different number of beeps (incongruent), and requires the participant t...
متن کاملThe Neurobiology Shaping Affective Touch: Expectation, Motivation, and Meaning in the Multisensory Context
Inter-individual touch can be a desirable reward that can both relieve negative affect and evoke strong feelings of pleasure. However, if other sensory cues indicate it is undesirable to interact with the toucher, the affective experience of the same touch may be flipped to disgust. While a broad literature has addressed, on one hand the neurophysiological basis of ascending touch pathways, and...
متن کاملAffective Touch for Robotic Companions
As robotic platforms are designed for human robot interaction applications, a full body sense of touch, or “sensitive skin,” becomes important. The Huggable is a new type of therapeutic robotic companion based upon relational touch interactions. The initial use of neural networks to classify the affective content of touch is described.
متن کاملArousal contributions to affective priming: electrophysiological correlates.
Current models of affective processing postulate that not only valence but also the arousal dimension characterizes the emotional experience. However, up-to-date research on affective priming has mainly focused on the contributions of valence congruency to priming. In this study, the authors explored the possible influence of arousal in priming processes. For this purpose, event-related potenti...
متن کاملContributions of Philip Teitelbaum to affective neuroscience.
As part of a festschrift issue for Philip Teitelbaum, I offer here the thesis that Teitelbaum deserves to be viewed as an important forefather to the contemporary field of affective neuroscience (which studies motivation, emotion and affect in the brain). Teitelbaum's groundbreaking analyses of motivation deficits induced by lateral hypothalamic damage, of roles of food palatability in revealin...
